How to Season a Cigar Humidor
Learn how to season a cigar humidor the right way in this quick guide. Step-by-step instructions using Boveda packs or distilled water to protect your cigars.
Hey there, cigar friends! Nothing ruins a great smoke faster than a dry, cracked wrapper or a cigar that burns like a torch because your humidor wasn’t properly seasoned. A new wooden humidor (especially one lined with Spanish cedar) starts out thirsty — it needs to absorb enough moisture to hold steady at that sweet spot of 65–72% relative humidity (RH) before you trust it with your cigars.
Seasoning is the crucial first step that prevents your humidor from robbing moisture from your cigars later. Here’s a straightforward, proven way to do it right.
What You’ll Need
- Distilled water (never tap water — minerals encourage mold)
- Clean, new sponge or soft cloth
- Hygrometer (calibrate it first using the salt test or Boveda calibration kit)
- Optional but highly recommended: Boveda 84% seasoning packs (one per 25-cigar capacity)
- Propylene glycol solution (50/50 mix) or just distilled water for the humidifier
- A small dish or shot glass
Step-by-Step: The Modern Boveda Method (Easiest & Most Reliable)
Many experienced smokers now prefer this set-it-and-forget-it approach because it’s gentle on the wood and reduces the risk of over-wetting.
- Calibrate your hygrometer — Do this first so you’re getting accurate readings.
- Wipe the interior — Lightly dampen a clean sponge or cloth with distilled water and wipe down all the cedar surfaces (walls, lid, tray, dividers). You want them damp, not soaking wet. This gives the wood a head start.
- Add the seasoning packs — Place the appropriate number of Boveda 84% RH seasoning packs inside the empty humidor (one 60-gram pack per 25 cigars of capacity). Many folks also add a small dish with a bit of distilled water for extra boost.
- Close it up and wait — Shut the lid and resist the urge to peek. Let it season undisturbed for a full 14 days. The packs will slowly release moisture, allowing the cedar to absorb it evenly without shocking the wood.
- Check and transition — After two weeks, open the humidor. Your hygrometer should read in the low-to-mid 80s. Remove the 84% seasoning packs (they’re single-use for seasoning). Replace them with your regular maintenance packs — most smokers prefer 69% or 72% Boveda for long-term storage.
- Add your cigars gradually — Start with a partial load (leave about 20% empty space) and monitor the humidity for a few days. Once it stabilizes at your target RH, fill it up.
The Traditional Wipe & Sponge Method (Still Works Great)
If you prefer the classic route:
- Wipe the interior with distilled water.
- Place a damp (not dripping) sponge on a dish inside the humidor along with a charged humidifier.
- Close the lid and check daily. Most humidors reach stable 70% RH in 3–7 days with this method.
- Remove the sponge once humidity holds steady, then add cigars slowly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Opening the lid constantly — every peek lets humidity escape and resets the process.
- Using too much water — soggy cedar can lead to mold or warping.
- Adding cigars too soon — they’ll dry out the humidor and lose their own moisture.
- Skipping calibration — an inaccurate hygrometer will fool you every time.
Once seasoned properly, your humidor should hold stable humidity with minimal maintenance. At Prisco Cigars, we always recommend keeping a few extra Boveda packs on hand — they make life much easier year-round, especially during dry winter months here in Florida.
A well-seasoned humidor is the foundation of every great cigar collection. Take the time to do it right, and your cigars will thank you with perfect burns and full flavor for months to come.
